As far as widgets, I haven't played with them at all, so I haven't had any need and thus can't comment on whether the theme supports it (I trust that it doesn't since you say so) nor what it would take for it to support it. I doubt those were the answers you were looking for... I really need to take their updates from upstream and update my theme, but as always, other things seem to take priority... I use Wordpress 2.5. After installing and activating it, the 3 buttons on the upper right are gray boxes and the images of the post-subject and the calendar are missing too.
